How to Verify Downloaded Course Videos and Find Broken Files

A three-point playback test catches incomplete, silent, frozen, or mislabeled course files before the original lesson access disappears.

“The file exists” is only the first check

A course video can have a plausible filename and nonzero size while still being incomplete, silent, frozen, mislabeled, or impossible to seek. Verification turns a download into a trustworthy study copy.

Use a repeatable test for every video you own or are permitted to save. Do not wait until the source access ends to discover that the last third of a module is unusable.

Use a three-point playback test

Open the completed file in a normal local media player, not the original browser tab.

Check three locations:

  1. Beginning: play the first 30–60 seconds and confirm picture and audio start correctly.
  2. Middle: seek to approximately 50 percent and play long enough to confirm seeking and synchronization.
  3. End: seek into the final minute and confirm the lesson reaches its real conclusion.

This catches most interrupted transfers without watching every lesson in full.

For unusually important creator masters, migrations, or compliance archives, use a stronger review appropriate to the value of the material.

Compare expected and actual duration

Record the runtime shown in the Skool player before downloading when practical. The local file can differ by a few seconds because of intros, stream segmentation, or player rounding, but a large mismatch is a warning.

Never mark a file verified solely because its size resembles another lesson.

Check the information quality

Technical playback is not enough if the lesson's useful information is unreadable.

Pause on:

  • the smallest interface text;
  • code or terminal output;
  • spreadsheet cells;
  • detailed diagrams;
  • slide citations;
  • captions when they are part of the study workflow.

Confirm audio, not just the waveform

Listen for:

  • missing audio;
  • audio that begins late;
  • drift between voice and picture;
  • abrupt gaps;
  • duplicated sections;
  • a second language or wrong track;
  • a final segment that cuts off mid-sentence.

For interview and coaching content, audio is often the primary value. A sharp picture cannot compensate for a broken conversation.

Do not delete the source or cancel platform access while unresolved files remain.

Separate download, verification, and archive status

Use explicit manifest states:

not started -> queued -> downloaded -> verified -> copied -> archive verified

                              -> needs review -> failed

Downloaded is a tool event. Verified is a human playback check. Archive verified means the copy at its final storage location was opened successfully.

Verify a batch without losing course order

For a large permitted course:

  1. Queue no more jobs than you can identify confidently.
  2. Move completed files into 98-needs-review.
  3. Run the three-point playback test.
  4. Compare duration and readable detail.
  5. Rename the successful file.
  6. Move it into the correct module.
  7. Update the manifest.
  8. Add the next lesson only after the statuses are clear.

This loop is slower than unattended downloading but much faster than reconstructing a mixed folder after access closes.

When to retry and when to stop

Retry once after correcting a plausible interruption: keep the tab open, reload normal playback, reduce quality, pause competing transfers, and ensure disk space is available.

Stop and document the result when:

  • your account cannot play the source normally;
  • the owner removed the video;
  • the player uses unsupported protection or DRM;
  • the requested quality does not exist;
  • permission is missing;
  • repeated fresh attempts fail in the same place.

Final verification checklist

  • The file opens outside the browser.
  • Picture and audio work at the beginning.
  • Seeking to the middle works.
  • The real ending is present.
  • Duration is reasonably consistent with the lesson.
  • Detailed lesson text remains readable.
  • Audio stays synchronized and complete.
  • The filename matches the course manifest.
  • The final archive copy was sampled separately.
  • Failures and exclusions have explicit reasons.
